The Basics Of Search Engine Optimization

Getting your web site to appear in the Search Engine listings can take time but there are a few things that you can do to speed up this process and increase your ranking relevancy.

Lets say you are interested in creating a web site is on something random like the football player Lionel Messi and you plan on generating revenue from this web site using Google Adsense.

First thing you need is a Domain Name and for this i recommend NameCheap

Now to increase your chances of appearing higher on the Search Engine listings i suggest you purchase a domain with “Lionel Messi” in the name or at least “Messi”. Obviously the best Lionel Messi domain names will already of been purchsed so you need to think of other name to use for your domain.

I prefer to purchase .com Domains but thats not to say a .net or .org or even a .info domain wont work because it will, i have a .net domain that gets over 3million hits a month and ranks number 1 for its main keyword.

The reason why choosing a relative domain name is quite simple…

If you look at this screenshot you will notice that the Top 3 Listings have lionel and/or messi included in the domain name (underlined in red). The reason why including the main keyword of your web site in the domain name is Relevancy! Google and all major search engines rank a web site higher in its listing depending on how relevant it is to the search term entered.

There are also many other factors which increase your chance of a better search engine listing such as the Title, Meta Tags, H Tags, Backlinks and general Content Relevancy. Lets have a look at each of these and see how easy it is to apply to your web site.

Title

A Title is classed as one of the more important relevancy ranking features of a web site. If you look at the Screenshot above you will notice that all the 3 top listings have lionel and/or messi included in the Title (marked in Orange). I suggest you use your main keyword for both Domain Name and Title.

Description

A Description is also very important as whatever is entered here is displayed on the Search Engine Listing so you want to be “Selling” your site to convince people to take a visit. A Description is also another search engine listing relevancy check and as you can see from the above Screenshot the Description is marked (Purple Box).

Keywords

Keywords are not as important as they used to be but it only takes you a few minutes to add 5-10 keywords that are related to the content of your web site.

H Tags

I went to a random Football web site to show you how to take advantage of a H1 Tag which also helps with Keyword Relevancy on your web site. The area at the top marked with a Yellow box is using a H1 Tag for the main text of the page. This web site is using a WordPress Blog which is what i use as the majority of SEO is already applied to your posts and pages making it easier to appear in the search engine listings. I recommend using a Dynamic H1 Tag for all your Posts and Pages so it matches the content on it.

Content

Try and aim for keyword rich content on your web site that is 100% related to what your web site is about as this will only help your search engine listings.

Backlinks

Backlinks (Inbound Links) are a fundamental part of making your web site or blog a success. If you want your web site to appear higher in the Search Engines you need to be contacting similar type web sites and asking for a Link Exchange. Make sure when you ask for a link exchange you request that the link is “dofollow” and the title of the link is your Main Keyword!

If you are just starting out with a web site i suggest you use WordPress as its very user friendly and the majority of SEO has already been applied.
